A typical pictorial genre in 17th and 18th century Netherlands, Vanitas – an allegorical still life about the fragility of the existence and an interplay of time and illusions – is also very contemporary (JM Basquiat and A. Warhol). Trained as an archeologist, the shape of the skull has for long fascinated me; whether real ones or sculpted in stone, I photograph them in various ways. In this series comprising 25 diptychs, the skull is paired up with a still life, as in 17th century paintings in which the association of these two elements formed the genuine “Vanitas”: esoteric still life or merely an interplay of forms?
