  • Tableaux Tables - table arts, Elisabeth Couturier curator, Madrid
L’Institut français produces the « Tableaux-Tables » exhibition. This exhibition curated by Elisabeth Couturier emphasises the collaboration between 38 French designers and 23 French manufacturers of tableware. Ten tables (60x120 cm), set out as tableaux, propose an original representation of different meals, from a high-energy breakfast to an intimate supper or working lunch. The touring exhibition is planned for an international circulation. « Tableaux-Tables » can be exhibited in a cultural institution or during a more important event like a festival, a conference or a seminar. The Institut français, which is the operator of the Ministry for Foreign and European Affairs, promotes french culture abroad. The Institut français leans on a network of some 150 French intitutes and 1500 French Alliances worldwide. Curator: A journalist, art critic and independant curator, Elisabeth Couturier contributes to numerous specialist and general-interest magazines. She is the producer and presenter, on France Culture radio, of the weekly show on the visual arts. She also directs the « Talk About… » collection of books, published by Flammarion and is the author of the first two titles in the series : « Talk About Contemporary Art », « Talk About Design » and « Talk About Contemporary Photography ». Scenography: After fashion and textile, stylist Olivier Guillemin, chairman of the Comité Français de la Couleur since 1993 and secretary-general of Intercolor since 2010, embraced other forms of creation, from cosmetics to design. Architect-designer Olivier Védrine rose to prominence in the 1990s for his work on transparency in colour, in particular his use of acrylic crystal in furniture and objects. In 2001, the two combined their talent and experience to form [o,o], an agency that makes its mark through furniture design, interior concepts for stores and retail spaces, event staging and scenography, and artistic direction for prestigious brands, worldwide. The exhibition By calling on talented names, manufacturers of tableware in France have poked holes in the rather pompous image which for centuries clung to their country's art de vivre. «Tableaux Tables - table arts, design and traditional savoir-faire» is an opportunity to showcase the most outstanding associations between French designers and producers. Our finest talents, from household names to the young generation, were contacted by our foremost makers of hollowware, flatware and crystal to renew and modernise their ranges. A dozen tables, set out as tableaux, propose an original representation of meals, from a high-energy breakfast to an intimate supper or a working lunch, along with other social gatherings such as brunch, a picnic or an eco-friendly buffet. A host of useful and beautiful objects, imagined by talented designers and produced by daring manufacturers. It's amazing what can be done with plates, dishes, cutlery and glasses!
